In Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India, an innovative AI-driven assessment pilot is transforming how student performance is evaluated across government schools. Launched as part of the Competency-based Census Assessment and School Reporting Pilot Project, the initiative has already assessed over 70,000 students from Classes 6 to 9 in five core subjects: English, Hindi, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. This system has completed more than 300,000 evaluations across both Hindi and English-medium institutions.
Previously, grading took several minutes per answer sheet and weeks to complete the overall assessment. Now, the AI-enabled system can grade a single sheet in mere seconds, allowing for the entire reporting process to be finalized within three days. The new individual report cards provide a detailed, topic-wise analysis of each student's strengths and weaknesses, moving beyond a single aggregate score. For instance, while a student might excel in analytical skills, they may show moderate progress in language comprehension.
The program, which covers over 1,000 schools across all 15 blocks of Jodhpur district, builds on a previous phase that began in October 2025 in 54 schools. Teachers are integral to the process, scanning answer sheets via a dedicated application for AI evaluation. This significant shift in assessment methodology is expected to enhance accountability and improve educational quality in the district, with findings to be discussed in upcoming parent-teacher meetings.
