The Allahabad High Court has issued a stay on the demolition of a house located at 39/12 in Dal Mandi, Varanasi, following a petition from owner Syed Abbas Murtaza Shamsi. The Varanasi Nagar Nigam had ordered the demolition due to the house's dilapidated condition, giving the owner just seven days to comply. However, during the court proceedings, senior advocate SFA Naqvi highlighted that the house was not listed among dilapidated buildings as of January 30, 2026. Furthermore, the demolition notice was sent in the name of a deceased individual, Shamshu Nisha Begum, which the court deemed rendered the notice void from the outset. The court has requested the Nagar Nigam to produce the inspection report from April 15, 2026, that justified the demolition order. The case is scheduled for a fresh hearing on May 7, 2026, during which the current status of the house will be maintained, preventing any demolition until then. This legal dispute arises amid the government's Dal Mandi corridor project, aimed at widening a 650-meter road from Beniyabagh to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
