A recent report by India's Climate and Energy Frontiers (ICEF), prepared by Schmidt Sciences in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, identifies Tamil Nadu and Gujarat as exemplary models for India's clean energy transition. The report emphasizes the need for robust industrial policies to foster local manufacturing in sectors such as solar equipment, battery storage, green hydrogen, and electric mobility. Currently, India imports 80% of its solar module components and lithium-ion cells, primarily from China, highlighting the urgent need for domestic production capabilities. Additionally, the report underscores the importance of land-based carbon sequestration, noting that India's natural ecosystems can absorb nearly half a billion tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. With improved monitoring and research, this capacity could potentially increase by 400%. The report also points out that 90% of the infrastructure required for India's near-term economic ambitions is yet to be constructed, presenting a unique opportunity to integrate sustainability into future developments.
