The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has achieved remarkable milestones in deep-tech entrepreneurship during the fiscal year 2025-26. The institute's incubation initiative, 'Startup Shatam,' successfully incubated 112 startups, building on last year's achievements. In addition, 431 patents were filed, underscoring IIT Madras' commitment to translating research into real-world applications. The total portfolio of startups at IIT Madras now stands at 567, valued at over ₹74,100 crore (approximately $8 billion), which includes two unicorns and notable mergers and acquisitions. A landmark achievement was Ather Energy's IPO, marking the first public listing from IITMIC's portfolio. V Kamakoti, the director of IIT Madras, highlighted these successes during World IP Day celebrations, emphasizing the culture of innovation at the institute. The diverse range of newly incubated startups spans critical sectors such as AI, robotics, healthtech, and more, with over 60% founded by external entrepreneurs, showcasing IIT Madras' national reach. The institute's robust support system for intellectual property and commercialization has been pivotal in fostering this entrepreneurial ecosystem, with a focus on nurturing high-impact technologies and startups that address complex challenges.
