The United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala, led by Chief Minister V D Satheesan, is set to unveil initiatives aimed at developing the state's blue economy. With a strategic advantage of two international seaports, 17 non-major ports, and a 600-kilometer coastline, Kerala is positioned as a key player in marine sector development. The upcoming budget, scheduled for June 19, will outline projects focusing on fishing, aquaculture, marine technology, and cruise tourism. Satheesan emphasized the potential of the Vizhinjam international seaport as a sustainable development model for South Asia, benefiting from its proximity to international shipping routes and natural depth for large vessels. The government envisions making 50% of road transport via sea, enhancing connectivity between the sea and backwaters. Additionally, the administration plans to tackle challenges such as marine pollution and climate change, aiming to tap into the untapped revenue potential from the blue economy, similar to cities like Dubai.
