On May 2, 2023, the Indian government launched a nationwide Cell Broadcast System (CBS) to enhance disaster preparedness and response. Inaugurated by Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia, the CBS enables near real-time, geo-targeted emergency alerts to mobile devices, ensuring that alerts reach millions instantly without delays or network congestion. This innovative system, developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs, marks a shift from a reactive to a proactive disaster management approach. The CBS has already undergone successful trials in states like Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, demonstrating its effectiveness during emergencies. The system is designed to deliver alerts as priority notifications with loud tones and can function across 2G to 5G networks, making it accessible in both urban and rural areas. Additionally, it supports multilingual alerts and is integrated with the CAP-based SACHET platform for standardized disaster warnings. This initiative also aligns with the United Nations’ 'Early Warnings for All' initiative, positioning India as a key player in global disaster preparedness efforts.
