The ongoing US-Israel-Iran war has significantly impacted air traffic at Mumbai airport, leading to a 6.2% decrease in total passenger numbers in March 2026, compared to the same month last year. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) reported that international passenger traffic fell by 9.6%, totaling 1.15 million passengers, while domestic traffic dropped by 4.8% to 3.19 million. Flight cancellations were rampant, with 1,035 flights to the Gulf region canceled between February 28 and March 11, 2026. Other major airports in India, including Delhi and Hyderabad, also reported declines in international traffic. Rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices prompted airlines like Air India and IndiGo to increase fuel surcharges and reduce flight capacities. Air India announced a 22% cut in domestic flights from June to August 2026, while IndiGo plans a 5-7% reduction in domestic and a 17% cut in international capacity. Despite these declines, Mumbai airport's annual international traffic rose by 4.6% to 16.3 million for the financial year ending March 31, 2026.
