Samsung Electronics has reached a significant profit-sharing agreement with its workers, averting a planned strike. Following an internal vote, 74% of union members approved a deal that will see 78,000 semiconductor employees receive an average bonus of $340,000. This profit-sharing arrangement allocates 10.5% of Samsung's operating profit, estimated to total $22.6 billion (or 34 trillion South Korean Won). Of this bonus pool, 40% will be shared equally among all workers, while the remainder will be distributed based on departmental performance. Memory chip workers are projected to receive bonuses averaging around $400,400. This agreement is similar to one reached by SK Hynix, which promised its workers 10% of operating profits for the next decade. The deal highlights the increasing importance of collective bargaining in the tech industry, particularly as competition for talent intensifies.
