Consumers using Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders in India are receiving warning messages from oil companies regarding their subsidy eligibility. If either the consumer or their spouse has an annual taxable income exceeding ₹10 lakh (approximately $12,000 USD), they may lose their subsidy unless they respond within seven days. This measure is part of a government initiative to ensure that subsidies are directed to lower-income households, with verification now based on official tax records instead of self-declaration. The oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, are implementing these checks as they align customer details with the Income Tax Department's records. Additionally, the Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) system has been made mandatory for LPG deliveries to prevent unauthorized cylinder diversions. Consumers are advised to verify delivery messages to avoid falling victim to fraud, as there has been an increase in fake messages aimed at stealing OTPs and DAC codes. Current LPG cylinder prices vary, with domestic cylinders priced around ₹915.50 in Bengaluru and ₹1002.50 in Patna.
