On April 28, an incident at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM) in Parel, Mumbai, resulted in the assault of nursing and security staff by relatives of a deceased patient. Following the death of a 19-year-old patient due to liver disease, a group of 14 to 15 relatives became aggressive, verbally abusing and physically attacking two nurses and four security personnel. One nurse remains hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the attack. The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) condemned the incident, emphasizing the mental stress inflicted on healthcare workers and questioning the safety of medical staff in government hospitals. MARD has called for immediate action from the government to enhance hospital security and ensure police intervention during such incidents. In response, Deputy Mayor Sanjay Ghadi visited KEM Hospital to discuss safety measures with hospital authorities, including Dean Dr. Sangeeta Rawat, who has requested trained security personnel to manage potential violence effectively. This incident underscores the urgent need for a safe working environment for healthcare professionals in India.
