The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is facing challenges in its investigation into four suspected deaths linked to watermelon consumption in Mumbai. The deceased, identified as Abdulla Dakodia, his wife Nasreen, and their daughters Ayesha and Zainab, raised concerns over the safety of watermelons. As a precaution, the FDA requires watermelon samples from a five to ten-kilometer radius around the incident site, but local markets are now devoid of the fruit. Vendors, fearing public panic and potential losses, are refraining from selling watermelons. Ali Ahmed Querishi from the Null Bazar Fruit and Vegetable Market Association noted that traders are avoiding stocking the fruit amid ongoing police inquiries. Although rumors of additional poisoning cases circulated, local hospitals confirmed that no new cases have been reported. The FDA's sample testing, which includes various food items from the Dakodia family, has also been delayed, further complicating the investigation.
