The State Wetland Authority of Haryana has requested an action-taken report from the Rewari district administration regarding the pollution issues at Masani Barrage, located along the Delhi-Jaipur expressway. Residents from at least 15 villages, including Kharkhra and Masani, have raised concerns about poor wastewater disposal practices and the discharge of untreated sewage into the reservoir, which is under consideration for wetland notification. The reservoir's catchment area spans 160β200 hectares during the monsoon season and is part of the Sahibi River basin linked to the Yamuna River system.
Inspections by the Haryana State Pollution Control Board revealed that biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) levels exceeded permissible limits, with nearly all water samples failing quality standards. An environmental compensation of βΉ5 crore (approximately $600,000 USD) has already been imposed on the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) for outdated sewage treatment practices. PHED is currently appealing this penalty in the National Green Tribunal.
To address these issues, a βΉ258 crore (approximately $31 million USD) project has been planned for the tertiary treatment of sewage and ecological assessments, with the first phase set to begin with a tender on April 28. Residents are advocating for the Masani Barrage to be officially declared a wetland, emphasizing its ecological significance and the need for upstream sewage treatment to protect local habitats.
