A Punjab Police team has arrived in Dibrugarh, Assam, to arrest Amritpal Singh, a radical Sikh leader and Member of Parliament for Khadoor Sahib, in connection with the February 2023 Ajnala police station attack. Singh's detention under the National Security Act (NSA) is set to end on April 22, 2024. Following his arrest, he will be produced in a local court to secure a remand for trial. The attack involved Singh and his supporters, who allegedly stormed the police station armed with swords and guns to secure the release of an aide. Singh, who won his parliamentary seat with 1.9 lakh votes as an Independent in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, has faced multiple legal challenges, including 12 FIRs related to violence and intimidation. The police have framed charges against him and 40 others under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including attempted murder and rioting. His arrest will allow the trial in the Ajnala case to proceed, which had been stalled due to his detention.
