India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has received approval to establish a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet production facility in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh. The state cabinet has allocated 600 acres of land for this project, which is anticipated to attract investments of approximately ₹1 lakh crore (around $120 million USD). The facility aims to manufacture about 140 advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA), with the assembly and testing of modules being conducted by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) based in Bengaluru. The decision follows Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's proposal to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The location was chosen for its proximity to Bengaluru, facilitating easier airstrip access and airspace coordination. The project is expected to create significant investment opportunities in the region and foster a robust support industry, although it has sparked political tensions with Karnataka, which previously housed Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) aerospace manufacturing.
