Ludhiana district in Punjab, India, has emerged as one of the top performers in wheat procurement this season, achieving approximately 81% of its target. The district has recorded wheat arrivals of 3.22 lakh metric tonnes in Ludhiana West and 3.45 lakh metric tonnes in Ludhiana East. Despite the robust procurement, lifting operations are facing significant delays due to a shortage of railway rakes and logistical constraints. In Ludhiana West, 19,495 metric tonnes of wheat have been lifted from around 20,000 metric tonnes procured, resulting in a lifting efficiency of 97.5%. Meanwhile, Ludhiana East has seen about 17,536 metric tonnes lifted, translating to an efficiency of 87.7%. Officials emphasize the need to expedite lifting operations to avoid congestion in grain markets as temperatures rise and wheat arrivals begin to decline. Overall, Punjab has successfully procured over 97% of wheat this season, but lifting continues to lag behind procurement levels.
