The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has brought forth claims in the Supreme Court of India regarding the impact of voter deletions on the recent assembly elections in West Bengal. Senior advocate Kalyan Bandhopadhyay argued that the special intensive revision (SIR) process led to the deletion of voters in a manner that materially affected election results. He pointed out that in 31 constituencies, the number of voters deleted was greater than the winning margins of BJP candidates over TMC candidates. For instance, in the Jangipara constituency, BJP candidate Prasenjit Bag won by 862 votes, while over 5,000 voters were deleted. Bandhopadhyay highlighted that the overall vote gap between TMC and BJP was nearly 32 lakh votes, with about 35 lakh appeals pending before appellate tribunals. He called for judicial scrutiny, especially in cases where the victory margins were less than the number of deleted voters. The Supreme Court bench acknowledged the need for a formal application to address these issues but emphasized the importance of expediting the resolution of pending appeals.
