Adrian Cameron Bembrick, a 41-year-old NDIS worker from Adelaide, has avoided jail time after defrauding the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) of more than $58,000. The District Court heard that Bembrick made fraudulent claims from July 2019 to March 2020 in an attempt to keep his struggling business, People Come First, afloat during difficult financial times. Judge Anthony Allen acknowledged that Bembrick's actions were not for personal gain but rather driven by desperation. He had been paying himself significantly less than his entitled salary while managing the organization's finances. The judge noted that Bembrick's behavior was out of character, as evidenced by references highlighting his previously blameless life and his volunteer work at a homeless shelter. Ultimately, Bembrick was sentenced to just under one year and eight months in prison but was released on a good behaviour bond for two years, requiring him to maintain good conduct. This case was notably different from that of former CEO Paul Kevan Tilbury, who was jailed for defrauding the NDIS of over $400,000 to support an unaffordable lifestyle.
