The Central Railway (CR) in Mumbai is set to open grocery stores on its property outside three suburban railway stations: Kasara, Vasind, and Mankhurd. This initiative aims to boost non-fare revenue while providing commuters with easy access to essential items such as spices, grains, pulses, and cooking oil. Currently, railway stalls primarily sell packaged snacks and drinks, but the new grocery outlets will cater to a broader range of needs. The 140-150 sq ft stores will be positioned in circulating areas accessible to all, not just commuters, allowing busy Mumbai residents to incorporate grocery shopping into their daily routines. Railway officials anticipate that these stores will attract substantial foot traffic, particularly in growing suburban areas. The initiative is also expected to create new business opportunities for small entrepreneurs and established grocery suppliers, potentially transforming railway stations into mini-commercial hubs. If successful, CR may consider expanding this concept to larger stations and those with elevated decks.
