Mumbai's Western Railway (WR) is set to enhance its suburban rail network starting May 1 by converting 17 existing 12-coach local trains into 15-coach services and introducing 12 new air-conditioned (AC) local trains. This upgrade aims to improve commuter capacity and comfort without changing the total number of services. The number of 15-coach trains on the Western line will increase from 227 to 244, with eight of the extended trains operating on the Virar–Dahanu Road section, which serves about 1.25 lakh commuters daily. However, these trains will not stop at Grant Road, Charni Road, and Marine Lines stations due to operational constraints. Additionally, WR will boost its AC services from 133 to 145 on weekdays and from 106 to 118 on weekends. On the Central Railway (CR) network, 14 non-AC services will be upgraded to AC on the CSMT-Panvel Harbour line, raising the total number of AC services on CR to 108. Despite these enhancements, the overall number of suburban services on the Central Railway will remain unchanged at 1,820, providing much-needed relief to daily commuters who rely on this essential transport system.
