A new controversy has emerged in Pune, Maharashtra, following the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) decision to name a newly constructed cancer hospital in Baner after Yashwantrao Bhimale, the late father of BJP leader Shreenath Bhimale. This decision has drawn criticism from civic activists and even caused discontent within the BJP. The hospital's inauguration by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is scheduled for Sunday, but the naming decision was revealed only hours before the event. Critics, including civic activist Vinita Deshmukh, have questioned the rationale behind naming multiple public facilities after the same individual, particularly highlighting the previous controversy surrounding the naming of a garden in Salisbury Park after Yashwantrao Bhimale. Deshmukh emphasized that the community fought for nearly 40 years to preserve the garden, only to have it named after Bhimale’s father at the last moment. The issue has also caused unease among BJP workers, as Shreenath Bhimale represents the Salisbury Park area while the hospital is located in Baner. Efforts to reach Shreenath Bhimale for comments were unsuccessful.
