Irregular garbage collection at Kamala Nehru Hospital in Pune has led to serious hygiene concerns, with waste piling up for over three days. This situation has caused inconvenience for patients, visitors, and hospital staff, prompting hospital authorities to raise alarms. Despite repeated complaints to the Kasba Peth ward office, the issue remains unresolved. In a letter dated April 23, hospital administration highlighted that the garbage collection vehicle from the ward office was not adequately addressing the waste generated by the facility. Dr. Prashant Bothe, the medical superintendent, stressed the importance of regular waste clearance, stating that sanitation is directly linked to patient safety. Patients and their relatives have expressed their discomfort with the unbearable foul smell near the waste collection area. Timayya Jangale, head of the Kasba Peth ward office, acknowledged the delays were partly due to larger waste disposal challenges across Pune, where the Hadapsar garbage depot is operating at full capacity. He noted that a request has been made to the Pune Municipal Corporation for additional garbage collection vehicles. Given that Kamala Nehru Hospital serves a steady influx of patients daily, maintaining proper sanitation is critical for infection control and overall patient safety.
