The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Punjab is set to begin on June 15, 2023, and will continue for four months, culminating in the publication of the final electoral roll on October 1, 2023. Anindita Mitra, the Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab, announced that out of 2.14 crore electors, 1.79 crore (approximately 83.69%) have already been mapped, with rural areas showing a higher mapping rate of 89.58% compared to 73% in urban areas. The SIR aims to ensure that no eligible voter is excluded while preventing ineligible registrations. The process will involve 24,453 booth-level officers conducting door-to-door visits from June 25 to July 24 to collect voter verification forms. The draft electoral roll will be published on July 31, with a window for claims and objections from July 31 to August 30. Mitra emphasized the importance of political party involvement and urged them to appoint block-level agents for the smooth execution of the SIR process. Duplicate voter registrations are considered an offense, punishable by up to one year in prison.
