The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati (IIT-Guwahati) to implement an advanced camera system aimed at enhancing rail safety. This innovative system utilizes Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors combined with GPS technology to continuously monitor track conditions with high accuracy. The plug-and-play onboard vibration IMU-GPS event camera system can be easily installed across locomotives and coaches without significant modifications. It also features event-based camera technology that detects and analyzes track abnormalities in real-time, allowing for continuous mapping of track defects and generating immediate alerts for potential safety risks. This collaboration seeks to leverage IIT-Guwahati's research expertise to develop a scalable and cost-effective solution, facilitating predictive and condition-based maintenance, thus reducing reliance on manual inspections. Overall, the initiative is expected to improve operational efficiency, reliability, and passenger safety while supporting the broader vision of data-driven and technology-enabled infrastructure management.
