X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, will close its Communities feature on May 30. The decision, announced by X Head of Product Nikita Bier, comes after Communities were found to be underutilized, with less than 0.4% of users engaging with the feature. Despite its vision of creating interest-focused public groups, Communities contributed to 80% of spam reports and financial scams on the platform. Bier noted that while some users found value in organizing niche topics, the most active groups often served as channels for user acquisition for other platforms. To replace Communities, X is introducing XChat, which will allow group chats of up to 1,000 people, enhancing real-time interaction. Users will also have access to custom timelines, powered by Grok, to curate posts on specific interests, such as food or photography. This shift represents a significant change in how users will engage with content on X.
