Sailen Daungal, a 46-year-old man from Tamenglong district in Manipur, was killed during a police encounter in Cachar district, Assam, on Thursday. Daungal, a former member of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA), was identified as a suspect in an attack on Assam Police that occurred on May 5, injuring a constable. Following the attack, police launched an operation to apprehend Daungal and his accomplices, who were involved in the inter-state transportation of narcotics and firearms. During the operation, Daungal and another suspect attacked the police, leading to a retaliatory response that resulted in Daungal sustaining fatal injuries. He was transported to Silchar Medical College and Hospital but succumbed to his wounds. Two police officers, Nabajit Tanti and Santosh Biswas, were also injured in the encounter. The police are continuing their investigation into the wider drug trafficking network linked to Daungal.
