A recent LocalCircles survey reveals that 95% of air travelers in the Delhi-NCR region prefer flying from Indira Gandhi International Airport over the upcoming Jewar Airport, which is set to commence commercial operations on June 15, 2026. The primary reasons for this preference are lower air fares and better proximity to the city. The survey indicated that 58% of respondents cited both lower fares and proximity as reasons for their choice, while 32% mentioned proximity alone. Only 5% expressed interest in using Jewar Airport, mainly out of curiosity. Concerns have been raised about the high charges at Jewar, with domestic landing fees reportedly 119% higher than those at Delhi Airport and a proposed User Development Fee (UDF) of ₹653 per domestic passenger, which is around 406% higher than Delhi's charges. IndiGo has warned that these costs could add approximately ₹103 crore per year in airport charges, potentially making operations from Jewar unviable. The absence of metro and rapid rail connectivity further complicates the appeal of Jewar Airport, as it is located over 70 kilometers from Delhi. The Uttar Pradesh government's recent VAT reduction on aviation turbine fuel may not sufficiently offset the higher airport charges, leading to all-inclusive fares that could be 20-25% higher than those at Delhi Airport.
