The National Crime Records Bureau's (NCRB) report themed 'Crime in India' reveals alarming statistics regarding rape cases in Chandigarh for 2024. In all 96 cases, victims were acquainted with their assailants, with 69.7% of the perpetrators being family friends, neighbors, or employers. Additionally, 24% of the cases involved friends or partners who exploited the victims under the pretense of marriage. The report also highlights that 47 of the victims were minors, with 64% of them aged between 12 and 16 years. This trend underscores the urgent need for awareness and education on sexual violence, particularly in familiar environments. Experts, including Pam Rajput from Panjab University, emphasize the importance of outreach programs in schools and colleges to educate young girls about these risks. The report notes that 339 cases related to crimes against women remain under investigation from previous years, with a 63.5% chargesheeting rate and a 47.4% pendency rate.
