Public outrage erupted in Kolkata following the arrest of Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor Bappaditya Dasgupta on serious charges including extortion and land grabbing. Hundreds of residents protested outside the Patuli police station, expressing their anger by hurling eggs at Dasgupta as police escorted him to court. The unrest was fueled by allegations that Dasgupta demanded ₹20 lakh from advocate Paramita Dey when she sought to establish a legal chamber at her home. After facing intimidation, Dey paid ₹2 lakh but continued to receive threats from Dasgupta's supporters. Dasgupta, along with an associate, was arrested under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), including criminal trespass and attempted arson. Minister Indranil Khan stated that the law would prevail and urged the public not to take matters into their own hands. This incident highlights the ongoing issues of corruption and intimidation associated with local political figures in West Bengal.
