Mamata Banerjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal and leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has canceled a scheduled meeting with Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) councillors to attend an INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi on June 8. The cancellation comes at a critical time for the TMC, following the resignation of Firhad Hakim, the former Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister and ex-Mayor of KMC. The new state government, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has issued a notice questioning the stability of the current TMC-controlled board in KMC. This internal turmoil follows the BJP's electoral success in West Bengal, which has led to dissent within the TMC ranks. The upcoming INDIA bloc meeting is significant as it marks the first gathering of opposition parties after the TMC's loss in the 2026 assembly elections. Additionally, the meeting aims to address ongoing differences within the bloc, particularly with the DMK opting out due to perceived betrayals by Congress in Tamil Nadu. Mamata's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, has also joined her in New Delhi.
