The Kottayam skywalk project, which has been mired in political controversy for over a decade, is now set for revival with the United Democratic Front (UDF) regaining power in Kerala. Kottayam MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan announced that the project will be taken up on a priority basis by the new state cabinet. The skywalk, designed to be 45 meters wide and supported by 6-meter-high pillars, was intended to enhance pedestrian access at a busy traffic junction but has faced numerous setbacks since its initial announcement in May 2015. After construction began in February 2016, work was halted shortly after due to political disputes. The previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government argued that the project was not viable and even considered dismantling the partially completed structure. An expert committee from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Palakkad recommended significant alterations, while the project came under scrutiny from the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau for alleged financial mismanagement. The revised cost of the project has escalated to approximately โน17.85 crore (roughly $2.14 million USD).
