In a significant move to enhance road safety and efficiency, Punjab, India, plans to roll out an AI-driven evaluation system for driving tests that will allow applicants to receive their driving licences on the same day they complete their tests. The Punjab State Transport Society (PSTS) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to upgrade and manage 32 Automated Driving Test Tracks (ADTTs) with this technology, with tenders set to be opened on May 7. The AI system, already piloted in Mohali, has demonstrated its effectiveness by reducing the pass rate from over 90% to 42%, highlighting a more stringent assessment process. This overhaul includes transforming testing centres into RTO Seva Kendras, which will offer various services such as biometric verification and online appointment bookings. The initiative follows a crackdown on malpractice in the licensing process, aiming to ensure that only competent drivers are licensed, thereby improving road safety.
