Pune, Maharashtra, India, experienced a 9% rise in overall criminal cases in 2024, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The city recorded 18,560 cases under various laws, up from 17,022 in 2023. A notable increase in violent crimes was observed, with cases rising from 2,296 in 2023 to 3,573 in 2024. Despite a decline in murder cases, which dropped from 101 in 2023 to 94 in 2024, other areas of concern included a rise in kidnapping, economic offences, and cybercrime. The NCRB reported 1,504 cybercrime cases, a sharp increase from 487 in 2023. Crimes against women and children also saw significant increases, with 2,631 cases against women and 1,330 against children. Local law enforcement officials attribute the rise in crime rates partly to the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), suggesting a need for improved policing and preventive measures.
