The NCERT Class 9 mathematics textbook, titled 'Ganita Manjari', is set to be introduced in the 2026-27 academic session and represents a significant shift in how mathematics is taught in India. With 196 pages and eight chapters, the new textbook emphasizes India's rich mathematical heritage, integrating historical narratives with core mathematical concepts. Unlike its predecessor, which focused primarily on procedural learning, this edition highlights contributions from ancient Indian scholars such as Baudhayana, who is credited with early geometric constructions, and Brahmagupta, who formalized the use of zero and negative numbers. The textbook also acknowledges Madhava of Sangamagrama, who contributed to the formulation of infinite series and irrational numbers. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, aiming to foster a deeper cultural understanding among students. NCERT director Dinesh Prasad Saklani noted that the textbook seeks to enhance students' problem-solving abilities through mathematical reasoning.
