The Indian Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has authorized ethanol blending in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) as part of a broader strategy to enhance energy security and promote cleaner energy amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. This initiative aims to reduce India's over 80% reliance on foreign oil imports and supports the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The ministry's order, issued on 17 April 2026, redefines jet fuel to include synthesized components that meet Indian quality standards. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the need for domestic energy self-reliance and stated that India should aspire to achieve 100% ethanol blending in the near future. Meanwhile, state-run oil companies are facing severe financial strain due to a price freeze on petrol and diesel, leading to losses of approximately ₹1,600 crore daily. This situation highlights the vulnerability of India's energy sector, given that 45% of its crude oil imports come from the Middle East. The government's focus on green technologies and regulatory updates marks a significant shift towards sustainable energy in the aviation sector.
