India's Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has amended the Aviation Turbine Fuel (Regulation of Marketing) Order, 2001, allowing the blending of ethanol and synthetic hydrocarbons with aviation turbine fuel (ATF). This decision aims to reduce oil imports and emissions, aligning with global trends where countries like the UK and Japan are mandating sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blending. The updated definition of ATF now includes blends that meet specific standards, but no immediate mandatory blending targets have been established. India plans to gradually incorporate 1% SAF into jet fuel for international flights by 2027, increasing to 2% by 2028 and 5% by 2030, in accordance with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) mandate. Currently, no blending targets have been set for domestic flights.
