The war in West Asia has disrupted cooking gas supplies, prompting the Indian government to take measures to ensure local availability of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). As of April 22, 2023, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder was raised by ₹60 in March, while the 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder saw two price hikes totaling nearly ₹344. The government has barred consumers with piped natural gas (PNG) from using domestic LPG cylinders and is enhancing infrastructure to promote a shift to PNG. To prevent shortages, the government has invoked emergency powers, directing refiners to maximize LPG production. Despite these challenges, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, stated that domestic LPG supply remains stable, with no dry-outs reported at distributorships. Online bookings have surged to 98%, and the availability of commercial LPG has reached about 70% of pre-crisis levels. Additionally, since late March, over 19.2 lakh 5-kg cylinders have been sold to migrant workers, supported by outreach campaigns.
