India has significantly ramped up its piped natural gas (PNG) initiative, establishing over 501,000 new connections since March 2023. This move is in response to the ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies, prompting the government to encourage households and industries to switch to PNG, which has proven to be a more reliable energy source. As of now, more than 568,000 consumers have registered for new PNG connections, with 39,400 LPG users surrendering their connections in favor of this alternative. Despite the disruptions, domestic LPG supply remains stable, with no shortages reported. The government has also increased commercial LPG availability to 70% of pre-crisis levels and has doubled daily supplies of 5-kg LPG cylinders for migrant workers. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has extended the nationwide PNG expansion drive until June 30, ensuring continued support for this transition.
