Sudhir Kumar Patra, a 47-year-old businessman from Gopalpur in Ganjam district, Odisha, was reported missing on April 16, 2023, after being abducted at gunpoint the previous evening. His niece, Nibedita Patra, 23, allegedly conspired with her boyfriend, Kalu Charan Pradhan, and hired contract killers to carry out the abduction and murder. This heinous act was motivated by long-standing family disputes over property and business interests, exacerbated by the death of Nibedita's father, Manoj Kumar Patra, in June 2025, which led to allegations of foul play against Sudhir. After being tortured and threatened for ransom, Sudhir succumbed to his injuries, and his body was later discovered near Ketamani Hills. Police arrested nine individuals involved in the crime, and investigations continue as they seek to apprehend additional suspects. The brutality of the crime and the familial ties of the perpetrators have shocked the local community.
