The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court took suo motu cognizance of extreme heatwave conditions affecting examination centres in Vidarbha, Maharashtra. Justices Anil Kilor and Raj Wakode initiated a Public Interest Litigation following media reports of inadequate facilities for candidates, particularly in Nagpur, where temperatures are nearing 45 degrees Celsius. The court directed authorities to ensure essential amenities such as proper ventilation, cooling systems, access to potable drinking water, and medical assistance, warning that failure to do so could lead to dehydration and heat-related illnesses among students. The court underscored the public importance of this issue, noting that it directly impacts students' health and academic performance. Citing Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, the bench stated that conducting exams under such conditions violates constitutional guarantees. The court's urgent intervention comes as major competitive exams, including the NEET (UG) scheduled for May 3, are approaching. The National Testing Agency had previously issued guidelines to improve conditions at exam centres, referencing a 2025 ruling by the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which mandated adequate seating and cooling arrangements.
