On Wednesday, the Indian National Congress officially severed its 55-year alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu, choosing to support the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) for the formation of a new government. Congress stated that this partnership is not only aimed at forming the current government but also at future elections for local bodies, the Lok Sabha, and the Rajya Sabha. The party's support is contingent on the TVK's commitment to keeping out any communal forces that do not uphold the Constitution of India. AICC leader Girish Chodankar expressed that this alliance seeks to revive the ideals of Perunthalaivar Kamaraj, focusing on social justice and constitutional values. Despite this significant political shift, Congress and DMK may still cooperate within the broader INDIA bloc, which was established to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the national level. However, this development raises concerns about the unity and cohesion of the coalition.
