The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved Mumbai's largest-ever municipal budget, totaling ₹80,952 crore. This budget reflects a significant increase in funding for civic works, with ₹800 crore designated for the standing committee, a rise from ₹650 crore in the previous year. Of this amount, ₹227 crore will be allocated to 227 corporators, with approximately ₹100 crore potentially reserved for the Mumbai mayor. Standing Committee chairman Prabhakar Shinde noted that the increase is justified by the presence of a newly elected body and is aimed at enhancing essential civic infrastructure, including water lines and public amenities. However, Congress leader Ashraf Azmi raised concerns about the budget's revenue projections and capital expenditures, highlighting that only ₹8,138.26 crore has been received against a projected ₹11,153.75 crore in income. He also pointed out that committed liabilities exceed ₹2.13 lakh crore for major projects, calling for clarity on financial support from the central and state governments.
