Rajya Sabha member Vikramjit Singh Sahney has urged the Union government to announce a special compensation package for farmers in Punjab, who are suffering severe losses due to recent unseasonal rains, hailstorms, and strong winds. In a letter to Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Sahney highlighted that preliminary assessments show crop damage ranging from 30% to 70% across the state, affecting over 34 lakh hectares of wheat cultivation. Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal echoed this call, requesting a special team to assess the damage and urging the minister to defer loan interest for affected farmers and provide fertilizers at concessional rates. Meanwhile, Bikram Singh Majithia has demanded ₹50,000 (approximately $600 USD) compensation per acre and called for legislation to ensure compensation for losses to fruits, flowers, and vegetables. In contrast, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring criticized the state's plan to conduct a girdawari, stating it would not effectively address the farmers' urgent needs. He emphasized that farmers cannot afford to wait for survey results, as past experiences have been disappointing.
