The Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) has strongly criticized the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government for allegedly misleading the public regarding the construction costs of Amaravati, the proposed capital of Andhra Pradesh, India. YSRCP spokesperson Vangaveeti Narendra stated that the actual construction costs range between ₹12,000 and ₹14,000 per square foot, rather than the ₹7,000 claimed by the TDP. He highlighted that the total cost for the construction of the CRDA building alone has escalated to approximately ₹335 crore, translating to ₹8,816 per square foot. Narendra accused the TDP of inflating tender values and manipulating data to present a false narrative about the costs involved.
He further pointed out that the projected costs for major structures, including the Secretariat, have surged from around ₹2,200 crore to nearly ₹7,724 crore when all components are considered. The YSRCP has proposed an alternative model, the MAVIGUN plan, which aims to develop a functional capital region encompassing Machilipatnam, Vijayawada, and Guntur for just ₹20,000 crore, a mere 10% of the estimated costs for Amaravati. The party is demanding transparency and accountability from the government, questioning the rationale behind the capital's development and the alleged financial irregularities that have surfaced.
