TikTok, the popular social media platform, has announced a €1 billion (approximately $1.16 billion) investment to construct a second data centre in Lahti, southern Finland. This facility will focus on storing data for European users, aligning with TikTok's commitment to data sovereignty for over 200 million users across Europe. The new data centre will initially operate at 50 megawatts (MW) capacity, with the potential to expand to 128 MW. This move comes amid increasing scrutiny from European nations regarding data protection and the safety of children using social media platforms. TikTok's first data centre in Kouvola is set to become operational by the end of this year, and both centres are part of a larger €12 billion initiative aimed at enhancing data security.
