The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an investment of ₹40,000 crore (approximately $4.8 billion USD) for two major hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh. The Kalai-II Hydro Electric Project, located on the Lohit river in Anjaw district, will have an installed capacity of 1,200 MW and is expected to generate 4,852 million units (MUs) of power annually. This project, the first of its kind in the Lohit basin, aims to enhance power supply in the state and assist in peak demand management. The Kamala Hydro Electric Project, spanning Kamle, Kra Daadi, and Kurung Kumey districts, will have a capacity of 1,720 MW and is projected to generate 6,870 MUs of energy. This project will also provide flood moderation benefits in the Brahmaputra valley. The Government of India will extend substantial budgetary support, including ₹599.88 crore for infrastructure and ₹750 crore for the state's equity share in the projects. The CCEA noted that other hydropower projects, such as Subansiri Lower and Dibang Multipurpose, are also under construction in the region, indicating a significant push towards enhancing hydropower capacity in Arunachal Pradesh.
