The Bihar environment and forest department has initiated a ₹50 crore project to transform Barabar Hills in Jehanabad district into a major eco-tourism destination. This site, known for its ancient rock-cut caves dating back to the 3rd century BCE, has historically attracted historians and travelers but lacked adequate visitor facilities. The project, announced by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, includes the construction of new gateways, theme-based shelters, a cafeteria, souvenir shops, and improved pathways. A 6-km pedestrian walkway will be developed alongside existing roads, featuring decorative elements and landscaping. Additionally, a three-stage water supply system will be implemented to support visitor needs. The minister emphasized the importance of balancing development with conservation and creating job opportunities for local residents. Once completed, the site is expected to significantly increase tourist footfall, positioning Barabar alongside other popular destinations in Bihar like Bodh Gaya and Rajgir.
