The Indian government has launched Project Him Sarovar to ensure year-round water security in Ladakh, a high-altitude region facing increasing water shortages. This initiative plans to construct 50 gravity-based ponds across Leh and Kargil, each measuring 40 meters long, 30 meters wide, and 2-3 meters deep. The project aims to capture melting snow and glacial water, which currently flows wastefully into rivers and streams, and will focus on areas identified through local input, such as Baroo village and Gindiyal village. The Public Health Engineering and Irrigation & Flood Control department is collaborating with armed forces and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to implement this project. The ponds will support irrigation and local water needs, while also fostering climate resilience. Additionally, a plantation drive will be initiated to enhance local agriculture, including the cultivation of Ladakhi apricot, seabuckthorn, and apples. Plans are also in place to develop winter sports facilities near these water bodies, creating recreational spaces and boosting local livelihoods.
