The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sealed sonography machines at five ultrasound centres for operating without valid licences, violating the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act of 1994. This action was taken following inspections by the PMC's PCPNDT cell, which monitors compliance with the law designed to prevent sex selection and female foeticide. The inspections revealed that these centres had not renewed their licences within the required timeframe. Dr. Nina Borade, the health chief of PMC, stated that the machines are expected to remain sealed for over a month until compliance is achieved. Additionally, four other centres were issued show-cause notices for various irregularities, including missing signatures on mandatory forms and delays in submitting monthly reports. Dr. Suryakant Devkar, assistant health chief of PMC, emphasized the importance of strict compliance with the PCPNDT Act, noting that any documentation lapses are treated seriously, and further action will be determined by the Advisory Committee.
