The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to implement Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology to map underground utilities accurately before conducting road excavation work. This decision follows a rise in incidents where digging has damaged essential services, including water pipelines, electricity cables, and gas lines, leading to service disruptions across various localities such as Baner, Wakad, and Hadapsar. Currently, excavations are often performed without precise utility maps, resulting in trial-and-error digging that can cause significant inconvenience and safety risks. The GPR technology uses high-frequency radio waves to generate detailed images of underground structures, allowing engineers to identify the location, depth, and size of utilities before starting work. Rajesh Bankar, chief superintendent engineer of the road department, emphasized that this technology will enhance planning and prevent avoidable damage. Citizens have welcomed this initiative, noting that it will reduce traffic congestion and financial losses for businesses caused by repeated road repairs. PMC has made GPR surveys mandatory in project estimates, signaling a shift towards more data-driven urban planning in Pune.
