Mamata Banerjee, the chief of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), launched a fierce attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding its proposal to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in West Bengal. Speaking at an election rally in Jhargram, she claimed that the BJP's push for the UCC aims to erase the distinct cultural and religious practices of various communities. Banerjee stated that if the TMC returns to power, they would revoke the UCC, asserting that the BJP's current majority allows them to pass such legislation. She also accused the BJP of attempting to invalidate her nomination for the Bhabanipur seat by filing false affidavits, which she described as a tactic to prevent her from contesting the April 29 assembly elections. Banerjee's remarks followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promise to implement the UCC to end what he termed 'appeasement politics.' The BJP's manifesto, released recently, reiterates this commitment. Banerjee further criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI), referring to it as a 'vanishing machine' and alleging that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process is fraudulent. In response, BJP leader Rahul Sinha dismissed Banerjee's claims as unfounded, suggesting she is trying to divert attention from her anticipated loss in the elections.
